Editorial: In quality (assurance) we trust - don't we?

The concept of quality has always been an important part of academic tradition and it has moved into the focus of international higher education over the last two decades. Some of the reasons for why awareness for quality assurance has expanded beyond the system itself are found in the diversity of higher learning institutions, increasing student numbers and student and teacher mobility, the emergence of ‘new public management’ and more competitive models of higher education with a larger concern for accountability. The articles in the March 2013 issue of ZFHE shed light on the current discourse about ‘quality’ and give an outlook on its potential, its complexity and they do both, critique but also offer constructive suggestions for where quality assurance may be headed.
