Coordinator for Innovation and Outreach

 (Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

The position starts at the next possible date, entails 75% of the fulltime weekly hours and is initially limited until February 29th 2020. The period of employment is governed by TzBfG. The place of work will be Dresden, Germany.

Background:

In early 2016, the European Commission held a public consultation of the research community to gather ideas on science and technology challenges that could be addressed through future FET Flagships. End of 2016, Commissioner Oettinger hosted a round-table event with high-level representatives from the Member States, industry and academia. They agreed on three major areas where promising grand science and technology challenges could be addressed by the FET Flagships: "ICT and connected society", "Health and the life sciences" and "Energy, environment and climate change". As a result, a call for preparatory actions for future research initiatives was launched in October 2017 as part of the Horizon 2020 FET Work Programme 2018. From the 33 proposals submitted, six were selected after a two-stage evaluation by independent high-level experts.

The European Commission has chosen Time Machine as one of the six proposals retained for preparing large scale research initiatives to be strategically developed in the next decade. €1 million in funding has been granted for preparing the detailed roadmaps of this initiative that aims at extracting and utilising the Big Data of the past. Time Machine foresees to design and implement advanced new digitisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to mine Europe’s vast cultural heritage, providing fair and free access to information that will support future scientific and technological developments in Europe.

Time Machine promotes a unique alliance of leading European academic and research organisations, cultural heritage institutions and private enterprises that are fully aware of the huge potential of digitisation and the very promising new paths for science, technology and innovation that can be opened through the information system that will be developed, based on the Big Data of the Past. In addition to the 33 core institutions that will be funded by the European Commission, more than 200 organisations from 33 countries are participating to the initiatives, including seven national libraries (Austria, Belgium, France, Israel, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland), 19 state archives (Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary,Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland), famous museums (Louvre, Rijkmuseum), 95 academic and research institutions, 30 European companies and 18 governmental bodies. In the next 12 months, Time Machine is expected to grow as a large community of communities, sharing a standardised platform, with more empowering tools.

Within the Time Machine the TU Dresden is responsible to develop the strategy and implementation plan for Outreach and Innovation. The work is organised around tasks Dissemination, Policy and Legal Issues, Ethics, Knowledge Transfer, and Exploitation Support Structures. The specific objectives are to prepare a roadmap, involve and engage relevant stakeholders, identify funding sources and determine conditions facilitating access to funding. TU Dresden will be responsible for:

  • Coordination in terms of preparation of documents to guide the work and the organisation of stakeholder workshops. Further comprised is the compilation of a roadmap.
  • Proposing of roadmaps and actions to foster dissemination and links to relevant scientific communities, innovators, and other private and public sector actors involved with cultural heritage as well as among decision-makers and the general public.
  • Leveraging exploitation support structures to assess options of and provide mentoring support for the commercial exploitation of results produced. This will take into account technology assessment and business mentoring of potential entrepreneurs amongst the Time Machine community. Outcome will be exploitation support instruments.

Responsibilities include mainly the operational coordination of the work package “innovation and outreach” within the Time Machine project, as well as the coordination of the Time Machine team at TU Dresden with 4 employees and several external workers as consultants and fundraisers.

Tasks:

  • Design, coordination and documentation of the roadmap compilation processes
  • Compilation of a roadmap and actions for industrial participation and dissemination
  • Communication and partnering with funding bodies as well as with European and global associations in the field of ICT and cultural heritage
  • Coordination and moderation of partners involved in the work package
  • Project management and personnel management of the Dresden team

Profile of requirements:

  • university degree
  • Proven experience with coordination within cross-national projects, ideally within the EU framework programs for research and innovation
  • Excellent skills in moderating and managing roadmap building processes as well as in networking with high-profile associations, science, politics and business
  • Proven leadership skills, practical experience in personnel management and in the management of tasks
  • Very good spoken and written English skills

Embeddedness in international high-profile networks to associations in the fields of ICT and/or cultural heritage as well as a good industry networking are desirable.
