Project Team Member (m/w/x) in the field of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration

Kontakt: Susanna Balkenhol
Ort: 53121 Bonn
Web: https://www.bicc.de/ Bewerbungsfrist: 03.05.21

Founded more than 25 years ago, BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion) is a non-university research institute with international staff. The institute deals with a variety of global topics in peace and conflict research in international projects and, on this basis, provides policy advice and contributes to public debates.

We are looking for a

project team member (m/w/x)

full- or part-time / pay scale 13 TV-L / until 31 December 2022, who can join us as soon as possible.

In the framework of a project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, BICC supports the operationalisation and dissemination of the revised UN Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Standards (IDDRS). BICC has been supporting the ongoing revision process of the IDDRS since 2018. BICC closely cooperates with the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) in New York to further develop the IDDRS and improve their use and applicability. To this end, a digital IDDRS database is planned to be developed. Additionally, evaluation and advisory missions as well as training activities on DDR are planned in the project.

Beyond the project, BICC publishes on DDR(-related) topics. The Center is also a long-standing member of the Integrated DDR Training Group, an association of institutes and international organisations that offer training activities in DDR.

Your tasks:

You are involved in the implementation of the IDDRS project and shape the project's content together with other team members. You conduct research and publish in the above thematic areas. You support the project leader in acquiring new projects and, if desired, will have the opportunity to develop and submit your own proposals. Your tasks in detail:

  • Evaluation and analysis of ongoing DDR processes
  • Research on and preparation of complex information
  • Support in the preparation of and during the DDR evaluation missions in close cooperation with the United Nations and other partners
  • Needs-based technical support of the United Nations, regional organisations and UN member states in DRR (f. ex. conflict analyses, making available DDR-relevant information on peace processes)
  • Content-related preparation and implementation of DDR training activities (online and in-person events)
  • Support in the development of the concept of an interactive IDDRS database
  • Conceptual planning and content-related implementation of events
  • Writing of publications in diverse formats on disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration and related research areas (also based on empirical field research)

Your profile:

  • You have completed your studies in one of the fields relevant to the project, such as Social Science, Political Sciences, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies or any other relevant discipline.
  • You have work experience in international relations (for example peace consolidation, human rights, humanitarian or development policy).
  • You have a high level of expertise in disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, a good understanding of DDR concepts and approaches as well as knowledge of the workings of the UN system.
  • Experience in policy advice and/or academic research is desirable.
  • You are prepared to go on business trips.
  • Your English language skills are very good—in daily use as in specialised topics. Knowledge of French or Arabic is an advantage.
  • Good communication and presentation skills round off your profile.

We offer:

We offer you the opportunity to work in an inter- and transdisciplinary research and advisory institute located at the nexus between research and policy advice, which offers its staff contacts and networks in policy and (inter)national academic contexts. This environment opens up the opportunity to further develop your own profile by independent research. We will support you to the best of our ability. We attach importance to further (academic) qualification of our staff. This is why BICC offers various alternatives for this.

The position is remunerated according to the collective wage agreement for the public service of the Länder (TV-L), pay scale 13, and also includes the option of a company pension scheme (VBLU). The position is to be filled as soon as possible, initially until 31 December 2021, with the possibility of a longer-term perspective. While the position is designed as a full-time position, it also offers the potential to work part-time (min. 30 hours/week), equivalent to 75 per cent of the working hours of a full-time position. Your place of work is Bonn.

BICC supports the work-life balance of its staff through highly flexible working hours.

We expressly encourage women to apply. In those areas where women are still underrepresented, they will be given preferential consideration in accordance with the legal requirements if they have the same qualification, skills and professional performance as their competitors unless reasons relating to the person of a competitor outweigh this.

BICC strives for gender equality and diversity and welcomes applicants from any background. Applications by people with severe disabilities are welcome.

Please send your application with a complete set of documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, proof of qualifications, references, etc.) solely by email to Susanna Balkenhol (application@bicc.de) by 3 May 2021. She will also be your contact person for the application process.

Please combine your documents into one pdf document and state 07_21 as the reference. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applications in other formats. Applications will be viewed as soon as they are received. Therefore, interviews can take place at any time.

By sending in your application, you agree that the required data will be stored as part of the application process.
