The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology is currently inviting applications for the following position:

System Developer with backgrounds in Computational Linguistics or Computer Science
for 2 years with possibilities for extension (m/f/d) (100%, E 13 TV-L1)

We are seeking an excellent researcher who can contribute to our project to build up an academic online system for researchers in social sciences to search for datasets. We are interested in a researcher who has substantial skills in developing Web applications and experience using natural lan-guage processing (NLP) technologies. The researcher will be co-supervised by Kou Murayama and Xiaobin Chen, and will work in a very interdisciplinary team of researchers from psychology, educa-tion, and data science. This position is especially suitable for those who are considering working to-wards a Ph.D. or in industry in the near future.

The position comes with a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years with the possibility for extension. The expected start date is middle of 2022 but we are flexible and committed to accommodating can-didates’ individual circumstances. You will work in the Hector Research Institute, which is a nationally and internationally leading research center in education sciences and psychology (www.hib.uni-tuebingen.de). You will also be given the opportunity to join the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network (www.lead.uni-tuebingen.de) to develop a cross-faculty collaborative network of researchers.

The successful candidate is expected to work on creating a system that supports cumulative knowledge in social sciences by making it easy for researchers to find the datasets that they need. In addition to developing the system, the successful candidate is encouraged to work with other re-searchers within the institute as well as those from other departments, such as Departments of Lin-guistics and Computer Science, to further develop the skills/pursue their own research questions.

The successful candidate holds an excellent Master in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Data Science or related fields (or will have obtained one by the start date of the position). The candidate should demonstrate 1) substantial programming experience with popular programming lan-guages such as Python, Java, or Node, 2) experience and/or a good understanding of Web application development, 3) experience with database technologies such as SQL and NoSQL, and 4) prac-tical experience working with language data using NLP technologies. Experience with Information Retrieval is a big bonus. A visible commitment to research transparency is a plus. While beneficial, proficiency in German is not necessary for these positions.

For further inquiries, please reach out to Professor Kou Murayama (k.murayama@uni-tuebingen.de).

Applications including a cover letter detailing how your experience and skills can contribute to the project, a CV, degree and other certificates with transcripts should be sent via email in one single pdf-file to verwaltung@hib.uni-tuebingen.de stating “SystemDeveloper_KM” in the subject line.

The deadline is February 28, 2022. Disabled candidates will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants. The University seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women to apply for these positions. Employment will be officially orga-nized by the central university administration.
