The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW; www.ifw-kiel.de) seeks a

Junior Researcher (PhD student) in Economics and Global Health (75% of FTE).

This vacant position will be integrated in the global health research group under the supervision of Dr. Michael Stolpe. The group cooperates closely with leading medical researchers in the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation.”

The global health research group is currently expanding its scope with a particular focus on non-communicable and chronic diseases, health inequalities and digital health services and is building new interdisciplinary and international research alliances with leading health economists and medical researchers. The research will make use of large datasets to test and calibrate empirical models with the aim to develop evidence-based policy advice for national and international decision makers in health policy and healthcare management. Thus, excellent quantitative analytical and statistical as well as communication skills are required.

Working environment

Apart from working closely with group members at the Kiel Institute, the successful candidate will liaise with external partners and help shape the further development of the group by contributing to the development of new research projects and grant proposals.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following conditions:

  • She/he holds a Master degree or an equivalent university degree in economics or in a closely related field (e.g. health science) with a strong focus on quantitative methods, has an excellent academic record and the ambition to earn a doctoral degree in global health economics.
  • The position’s primary focus will be on empirical research, with a focus on chronic diseases. Thus, interest and experience in empirical applications of economic theory as well as experience with the analysis of large health data sets are desirable.
  • The candidate should have experience and/or familiarity with quantitative methods used in micro-econometrics and/or biostatistics. In addition, the candidate should be interested in developing proposals for health policy reform.
  • The working language is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge of German would be useful, but is not essential.
  • The successful candidate should be acquainted with relevant analytical and statistical software, such as STATA, R, TreeAge and Matlab.

The position will be based in Kiel. The contract is initially limited to 3 years according to the law on limited employment contracts in research (WissZeitVG). The salary is based on the German public sector pay scale (EG 13 TV-L) with 75% of a full-time position (currently 29,025 weekly working hours). The Kiel Institute usually offers – if necessary – contract extensions to finish the dissertation within a maximum of four years.

The Kiel Institute is an equal opportunity employer with a certified family-friendly policy (http://www.ifw-kiel.de/about-us/equal-opportunity-at-the-kiel-institute/). We promote the professional opportunities of women and strongly encourage them to apply. Women with equivalent qualifications, competence and expertise will be given preference. We are committed to employing persons with recognized disabilities and will therefore give them preference over persons without disabilities if they are equally qualified.
