PhD position (f/m/d) on DFG-funded project "Layered protein scaffolds for skin tissue engineering"

Kontakt: -
Ort: 28199 Bremen

The City University of Applied Sciences Bremen (HSB) with around 600 employees was the first university worldwide which offers academic studies in biomimetic (BSc, MSc). The Biomimetic-Innovation-Centre of HSB has around 20 employees and is engaged in the identification and investigation of physical phenomena in nature and transfer of the latter to technical applications. Current and previous research projects were funded by public institutions and by industry. Focal points are locomotion, construction and materials. In the first domain, flows over and in bodies are of special interest. Here, research is carried out in the fields of functional surfaces (reduction of frictional drag, poison-free anti-fouling flows), shape design of bodies (reduction of drag, lift enhancement, manoeuvrability). Investigations are carried out by numerical simulation using different codes and by experiments.

At the Bremen University of Applied Sciences, subject to the release of funds, is a vacancy from 1. August 2023 for the

PhD position (f/m/d) in the project "Layered protein scaffolds for skin tissue engineering"

Code: FK4-10-2023, Pay group / Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L

to be filled with 29.4 hours per week and to be limited for 36 months. The position is suitable for part-time.

We offer a PhD position in the interdisciplinary DFG-funded project "Layered protein scaffolds for skin tissue engineering". When developing new skin models, it is particularly important to mimic the layered architecture of native skin with varying porosity, composition and thickness. At the same time, skin substitutes need to support the simultaneous growth of different cell types. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop layered fibrinogen-collagen scaffolds with nanofibrous architecture to support co-cultivation of skin cells.

The PhD student will routinely fabricate fibrinogen and collagen nanofibers by self-assembly and characterize the scaffold topography via scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical characterization will be accompanied by analysis of scaffold swelling in aqueous media. In subsequent in vitro studies, co-cultures of keratinocytes and fibroblasts will be used as model cells for wound healing to study the cell interaction of layered scaffolds and provide a proof-of-concept for a new skin substitute material.
