Postdoctoral Fellow

The Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow to work either in evolutionary algorithms or machine learning.
The successful applicant will join the group of Prof. Rothlauf: https://wi.bwl.uni-mainz.de/team/ and will be encouraged to collaborate with other members of the JGU, other postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.

YOUR TASKS:

The successful candidate will work in the field of Evolutionary Algorithms or Machine Learning. Possible research topics are:

  • analysis and design of evolutionary computation approaches,
  • estimation of distribution algorithms or
  • machine learning models (e.g. neural networks or random forrest). 

In addition, the succesful candidate will teach four hours a week.

YOUR PROFILE:

Candidates with experience in heuristic optimization or machine learning and an interest (though not necessarily experience) in any of the aforementioned areas are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or similar by the beginning of the appointment. 

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 58 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate:

  • A successfully completed university degree
  • A doctorate in a field relevant to the position
  • Post-graduation full-time work experience of at least 2.5 years

If the legal requirements for civil servants are not (or not yet) met, employment as an academic member of staff (EG 13 TV-L) may be possible.

The initial appointment will be made for 4 years (with a possible extension of up to a maximum of 6 years in total), comes with a competitive salary based on the German public service scale A 13 LBesG, health benefits, and relocation expenses. The position serves the purpose of academic qualification and the acquisition of additional academic achievements.

The anticipated starting date is February 2022, though an earlier or later date is possible.
