The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is seeking to fill a position at the Chair of Stochastics and Optimization starting September 15, 2025.

Research Assistant (m/f/d)

with the aim of promoting one's own scientific qualification by participating in a DFG-funded research project. The position is initially limited to 3 years. An extension is possible in accordance with the applicable regulations of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz. This is a 75% part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours. The position includes a qualification component.

The DFG-funded project entitled »Fast and smart approach for buildings Risk Assessment using open accessible geostatistical data and data-driven classification methods - SmartRA« aims to propose a digitally supported fast visual analysis method that uses drone-based and geostatistical information to achieve a highly efficient, more reliable, versatile and fast assessment of the vulnerability of buildings to earthquakes in a neighborhood.

Responsibilities:

• Work in the above mentioned DFG project, in particular:
• Development and implementation of data pipelines for automated analysis of image data (e.g. Google Street View, drone footage);
• Extraction of building-related information from images and videos using deep learning methods or computer vision;
• Integration of the extracted information into GIS systems, taking into account geostatistical data (e.g. age, construction, use);
• Development of mobile applications for recording and visualizing building data on site;
• Research into the use of camera systems (e.g. GoPro, dashcam) for automated data collection in the streetscape;
• Close coordination with colleagues in the project; publication activities;
• Participation in networking the professorship in the region and with partners in academia and industry
• Participation in the expansion and further development of international cooperation;
• Implementation of own qualification project, preferably as a doctorate;
• Participation in the academic self-administration of the professorship and in university committees.

Recruitment requirements:

• Successfully completed university degree in computer science, computer vision, data science, civil engineering or related disciplines;
• Familiarity and routine in programming; especially Python, Matlab and / or C++;
• Experience in image processing, computer vision and machine learning;
• Knowledge in software development or mobile applications (Android/iOS) an advantage;
• Familiarity with GIS software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS) and geostatistical data processing;
• Ability to think critically and work independently;
• Very good written and spoken German and English,
• Other languages an advantage (Italian, Greek, Turkish, ...)
• Relevant professional experience is an advantage;
• First scientific publications and international academic experience are an advantage;
• Willingness to travel and work abroad to collect data is essential.
