With a team of more than ten researchers who are working on issues of forced displacement, BICC is currently one of the leading centres on forced migration research in Germany. Our work in this area focuses on intensive qualitative fieldwork in the respective study regions. In the project “Trajectories of reintegration. The impact of forced displacement, migration and return on social change”, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), BICC uses qualitative research methods to investigate return processes of displaced people in West Africa, the Middle East and the Western Balkans.

Your tasks:

As project leader, you are responsible for the BMZ-funded project “Trajectories of reintegration. The impact of forced displacement, migration and return on social change” and assume staff responsibility for the interdisciplinary team. Your tasks in detail are:

  • Professional lead and coordination, conceptional project design, project management, responsibility for attaining project goals, budget responsibility;
  • Team leader;
  • Professional contribution to project-related topics, e.g.return and (re)integration, everyday practices and social networks of forced migrants, protection and return regimes, refugee policies;
  • Field research and travels to one of our study regions (West Africa, Middle East, Western Balkans);
  • Representation of the project towards and coordination with the BMZ;
  • Advising policymakers and practitioners on the basis of our research;
  • Networking with partner organisations on the national and international level;
  • Conceptualisation and planning of research projects, including proposal writing.

Your profile:

  • You have completed a doctorate in Social Sciences (i.e. Sociology, Political Science, Geography, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Migration Studies, Development Studies, Peace and Conflict Research, Area Studies).
  • You are experienced in leading interdisciplinary teams and, ideally, in leading researchers with individual research foci and interests.
  • You have already written academically relevant research papers and acquired excellent knowledge of social science theories and concepts, as demonstrated by relevant publications.
  • You have contacts to (inter)national networks on Forced Migration Studies.
  • You are prepared to frequently travel on business, also to areas with a tense security situation.
  • Your German and English language skills are very good—in daily use as in specialised topics.
  • Good communication and presentation skills round off your profile.

We offer:

We offer you a diverse leadership position in an appliedresearch and advisory institute that works across academic disciplines. Your scope of activity is professionally demanding, multi-faceted and offers a great deal of creative freedom. Your place of work is Bonn.

The position is remunerated according to the collective wage agreement for the public service of the Länder (TV-L) up to pay scale 14 and also includes the option of a company pension scheme (VBLU). The position is to be filled as soon as possible, initially for a limited period of two years, with the possibility of a longer-term perspective.
