Job advertisement

We hereby invite outstanding candidates to apply to the following opening in the FB 09 Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences – Institute for Nuclear Chemistry – as

Postdoctoral researcher in theory of the heaviest elements (m/f)
(Salary class 13 TV-L)
– Reference number: 10719-09-wiss-ml –
– full time –

for a 2 year contract starting the earliest date possible.

Job description:

The current vacancy is part of the EU-funded project „Laser Resonance Chromatography of Superheavy Metals“. The project aims at the development and implementation of a novel approach in optical spectroscopy of the superheavy elements by combining laser spectroscopy with ion-mobility mass spectrometry. The experiments can provide us with a wealth of information on atomic and nuclear structure and other important physical and chemical properties. As these experiments are extremely challenging due to the short half-lives and low production yields of the investigated elements, theoretical support is crucial for their success.

Requirements:

The applicant should have a PhD degree in theoretical chemistry or theoretical atomic or molecular physics. Candidates with prior experience in relativistic methods on top of the ab-initio quantum chemistry background will have a strong advantage. The level of experience and skill in programming and code implementation will be accounted for as well. Good communication skills (both verbal and written) in English are a prerequisite. The candidate should be enthusiastic about research, capable of learning new skills, and happy working both independently and in collaboration with other scientists.

The applicant must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 56 Hochschulgesetz Rheinland-Pfalz in addition to the general employment requirements.

Research environment:

The researcher will be embedded into an experimental group at the Institute for Nuclear Chemistry in Mainz and will work in close collaboration with Dr. Anastasia Borschevsky (University of Groningen, the Netherlands) and Prof. Alexei Buchachenko (Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Moscow, Russia). Regular research visits to both institutes are anticipated.

We offer:

A self-dependent and multifaceted job with direct applications in cutting-edge research projects. In addition, we offer opportunities for continued education and professional development. A challenging and versatile task in a qualified team. We offer you comprehensive additional services, such as the payment of an annual special payment, participation in the supplementary pension scheme in the public sector via the VBL, the possibility of purchasing a job ticket and extensive personnel development offers.
