The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is recruiting 1-2 highly qualified Post-Docs, or more senior Research Scientists, to join the Lab of Digital and Computational Demography, headed by the MPIDR Director Emilio Zagheni.

The Lab of Digital and Computational Demography brings together methodologists (from areas like Statistics, Computer Science or Formal Demography) with experts in various areas of the Social Sciences in order to foster cross-pollination of ideas, to advance methods and theory, and to address pressing scientific and societal questions.

The successful candidate must have a PhD (or receive it soon) and is expected to have a profile along one of the following lines:

1. A methodologist interested in advancing computational, statistical or mathematical methods with applications to population science.
2. A social and behavioral scientist with strong expertise in at least one of the following substantive areas: migration and mobility; aging, mortality and demographic change; environmental demography; (digital) health; technological change and well-being.
3. A computational social scientist interested in working on questions central to population research.

Across all profiles, ability and willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams in order to conduct cutting-edge research that advances our understanding of population processes is key.

Candidates who can enrich or complement projects in any research area of the Lab will be considered.

Examples of themes that we are interested in strengthening include (but are not limited to):

• The use of advanced statistical analysis, machine learning and causal inference for prediction and understanding of survival, indicators of aging and well-being, and demographic outcomes across countries;
• Assessment of the relationships between climate change, population dynamics and individual behaviors, including the impact of climate change on demographic and health indicators.
• Assessment of the impact of technological transformations, including the digitalization of life, on social inequalities, demographic outcomes and well-being.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their own research agenda, collaborate throughout and beyond the MPIDR, and supervise PhD students. Your PhD can be in any area that provided you with the necessary skills for high-quality demographic research; recent recruits have had PhDs in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Epidemiology, Statistics and Anthropology. Zu den Schwerpunkten des Arbeitsbereiches gehören unter anderem:

1. Die Zusammenführung von traditionellen Datenquellen und neuen Daten, die aus der Digitalisierung des Lebens gewonnen werden, um so demografische Prozesse zu untersuchen, wie etwa Änderungen im Migrationsverhalten, in der Gesundheit und dem Wohlbefinden, in den intergenerationellen Beziehungen und in den Disparitäten zwischen den Geschlechtern.
2. Die Entwicklung innovativer Formen der Datenerhebung für die demografische Forschung (bspw. Surveys über Web- und Social Media-Werbeplattformen oder Datenerfassung über Sensoren, Tracking-Geräte, Handy-Apps oder Crowdsource-Applikationen).
3. Die Entwicklung von Modellen für die Simulation von individuellen Entscheidungen und von Prozessen, die auf der Bevölkerungsebene angesiedelt sind, um so neue Erkenntnisse über die Dynamik der Bevölkerungsentwicklung zu gewinnen und die Bevölkerungstheorie weiterzuentwickeln.
4. Die Bewertung von Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung unseres Lebens auf das demografische Verhalten, das Wohlbefinden und auf Bevölkerungsprozesse.
5. Die Modellierung, Schätzung und Vorhersage der Zusammenhänge zwischen Veränderungen in der Umwelt, demografischen Prozessen und der Krankheitsdynamik.

Der Arbeitsbereich „Digitale und computergestützte Demografie“ bringt Methodiker*innen (bspw. aus der Statistik, Computerwissenschaft oder Mathematischen Demografie) mit Expert*innen aus den Sozialwissenschaften zusammen, um so die gegenseitige Befruchtung von Ideen anzuregen, Methoden und Theorien weiterzuentwickeln, und drängende Fragen unserer Gesellschaften zu beantworten.

Erfolgreiche Kandidat*innen sollen eine Promotion vorweisen können (oder ihre Promotion bis zum Stellenantritt Anfang 2021 abgeschlossen haben). Das Profil soll einer der folgenden Qualifikationsanforderungen entsprechen:

1. Ein*e Methodiker*in mit aktivem Interesse daran, methodische Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der digitalen und computergestützten Demografie zu erzielen.
2. Ein*e Sozial- und Verhaltenswissenschaftler*in mit hoher Fachkompetenz in mindestens einem der folgenden inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte: Migration und Mobilität, Bevölkerungsalterung und Generationsprozesse, Sozialdemografie, Umweltdemografie, (digitale) Gesundheit, technologischer Wandel und Wohlbefinden.
3. Ein*e Computer-Sozialwissenschaftler*in mit Interesse an der Arbeit an zentralen Fragen der demografischen Forschung.

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research is recruiting two post-doctoral research scientists to work on labor demography. The project focuses on understanding the determinants and differences in the length and productivity of working and retirement lives, across and within populations. The project is conducted in collaboration with two other laboratories at the MPIDR, Lab of Population Health, and Lab of Fertility and Well-being.

Successful candidates will have strong quantitative skills and background in the social sciences. The positions are for 3 years, with possibility for prolongation. Starting salary is 47-66k€ depending on relevant post-doctoral experience. Starting date is flexible, but no later than fall 2016.

Interesse, entsprechende Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten zu vertiefen und auszubauen, sind erwünscht. Sehr gute Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse werden vorausgesetzt.

Diese Stelle ist ab Februar 2016 zu besetzen. Das Beschäftigungsverhältnis ist zunächst auf 3 Jahre (bis Ende Januar 2019) befristet. Die Vergütung richtet sich nach dem Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst und erfolgt nach Entgeltgruppe 14 TVöD. Dies schließt die Gewährung der Sozialleistungen des öffentlichen Dienstes (Bund) mit ein.
