Germany’s largest research organization, the Helmholtz Association, launches Helmholtz AI: This dedicated, interdisciplinary platform will compile, develop, foster and promote applied artificial intelligence (AI) methods nationwide for all Helmholtz Centers in collaboration with its external and university partners. Its central unit is currently being implemented in Munich, one of Germany's major hubs for applied AI, at the Helmholtz Center Munich.

Science Manager of the Central Unit of Helmholtz AI (f/m/d) 2020/0014

Job Description

To cover the maternity leave of one of our employees, we will need additional support limited to one year (starting as soon as possible).

The overall purpose of this job is to manage a broad range of workstreams and funding lines, coordinating advisory and other boards and overseeing quality management. On these matters you will serve as a point of reference to the Helmholtz AI team and researchers across the whole Helmholtz Association. You are joining a growing unit, in a dynamic, open and international environment.

You will be

  • managing a broad range of workstreams, most importantly Helmholtz AI Project Calls (e.g. from overseeing the review processes of proposals to ensuring efficient reporting) and the Helmholtz AI Voucher System (e.g. from establishing the project management and assignment of requests to the monitoring of running projects), establishing and upholding quality management guidelines
  • providing strategic and operational structure for the governance of Helmholtz AI, e.g. for regular meetings of the Steering Board and the Scientific Advisory Board
  • cultivating and stewarding interactions with various stakeholders, e.g. the Helmholtz AI Local Units and the Helmholtz Association’s Head Office
  • supporting the organization in the delivery and evaluation of various scientific events for Helmholtz AI (e.g. hackathons, network meetings, workshops as well as international conferences)
  • sharing our enthusiasm for promoting AI and nurturing our friendly, cooperative environment where everyone’s contribution is valued

You have

  • a MSc-level university degree in life, computer or natural science; a data science background and a PhD are considered plusses
  • experience in scientific project management; experience in quality management is considered a plus
  • breadth of interest in the research areas of the Helmholtz Association and in Artificial Intelligence
  • analytical and critical thinking skills to identify key considerations for a given issue or project
  • a collaborative and creative approach
  • attention to detail and the ability to diligently manage a broad range of different responsibilities in your own time
  • the ability to interact with representatives of the scientific community and administrators at all levels of seniority
  • strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • excellent verbal and written fluency in English and German
  • very good working knowledge of MS-Office applications; experience with or affinity for project management software is a plus

Scientifically, EnTech (a) integrates structural and chemical biology, drug discovery, pharmacology and advanced data-integration at the molecular level; (b) develops sensing and imaging tools for innovative imaging platforms which facilitate intelligent deposition of biological and clinical information at the cellular and system level and (c) uses novel computing and modeling algorithms for advanced information processing and data analytics promising unprecedented biological and biomedical insights. Entech’s pipeline already yielded high-impact papers, successful technology spin-offs and commercialization. Our research is regularly featured in major news channels and received broad recognition including several prestigious awards and considerable research funding from national and international sources.

To accelerate EnTech collaboration and propel Enabling Technologies to the next level, we now seek a highly qualified and motivated Enabling Technologies Manager (f/m). The successful candidate will work closely with the topic director Prof. Ntziachristos, heads of EnTech partner institutes and the executive management at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen.

The Mission:

The Enabling Technologies Manager will conceptualize and implement activities that enhance EnTech productivity and impact. S/he will offer comprehensive administrative support at the interface of the participating institutions and govern EnTech-driven interdisciplinary projects. The offered position is crucial to free the EnTech scientific leadership from science administrative duties. With an exceptional level of responsibility and focus on efficient managerial processes, the Enabling Technologies Manager works seamlessly with the expert scientists and, hence, serves as token for the future success and societal impact of EnTech.

Qualifications:

The Institute of Molecular Biology is a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences, which is located on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg-University (JGU) in Mainz, Germany. As part of its commitment to training junior researchers, IMB’s Scientific Management coordinates the International PhD Programme (IPP) on “Gene Regulation, Epigenetics & Genome Stability” (www.imb.de/PhD), which comprises groups at IMB, JGU and JGU’s Medical Center. Furthermore, IMB coordinates a Postdoc Programme and organises an annual International Summer School (www.imb.de/ISS).

We are offering one full-time position in the coordination of the IPP together with the current coordinator. A second position includes the organisation of our Postdoc Programme, International Summer School as well as supporting the IPP Office. This position could also be part-time.

Activities include:

  • Advertising the programme internationally
  • Managing applications and the selection process
  • Communication with group leaders and students, including help with administrative matters and pastoral care
  • Organising the training programme and supervision of students
  • Planning and organising the programme’s events
  • Maintaining the programme’s website, intranet and students’ database
  • Coordinating reporting and evaluations of the programme

We are looking for dynamic people who have

  • Experience in managing structured recruitment and training programmes, esp. PhD programmes
  • A very good command of English, both written and spoken
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact with students and scientists at different levels, and experience working in international contexts
  • An outgoing personality, a high degree of motivation, reliability and flexibility, along with an ability to work independently and constructively within a service-orientated team
  • A degree in the life sciences or a good understanding of the field would be advantageous
