Many higher education institutions today offer online delivery as an alternative or addition to provide more flexibility to learners. However, students being confronted with such services come with different expectations to what that means to their learning paths and behaviours. Learning Analytics is a rather new and innovative way of making student behaviour and performances explicit through analysing large sets of learner data.
In this article, we take the case of online and blended learning from the University of Mauritius and hold the analysis of student interaction data against their performances and achievements. The study encompasses the entire population of first year students over two consecutive academic years of an undergraduate programme in Web and Multimedia Development. We classified the data into distinctive parts namely participation (or engagement), coursework marks, exam marks, and overall results to identify relationships that may influence student retention.

Rankings, Diversity and the Power of Renewal in Science. A Comparison between Germany, the UK and the US
Rankings are part and parcel of the neoliberal agenda in science aiming at increasing the competitive allocation of funds among universities. This article focuses on the decreasing power of renewal in science as a result of this agenda particularly because of its increasingly consolidated stratification of the academic system into élite and mass institutions. A comparison based on data from the Academic Ranking of World Universities of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University between the less stratified German system, the more strongly stratified British system, and the most strongly stratified, though at its heart still diverse US-American system provides a first test of the hypotheses.

Assessing the Quality of the Bachelor Degree Courses: An Analysis of their Effects on Students' Acquisition of Economic Content Knowledge
Quality development in higher education (HE) relies on the assessment, evaluation, and optimisation of university teaching. Only a few studies have evaluated the new bachelor (BA) and master (MA) degree courses in Germany based on an objective measurement of key performance indicators, such as students' knowledge acquisition. To address this research deficit, students' content knowledge of business and economic (b&e) was assessed in a longitudinal study. Results of students in the BA/MA study model were compared to those of students in the former Diplom study model while many potential structural and personal influence factors were controlled. This paper presents in detail the findings and discusses their implications for quality assurance and performance assessment in HE.

Internal Quality Assurance and Benchmarking
This report by the authors Douglas Blackstock, Nadine Burquel, Núria Comet, Matti Kajaste, Sérgio Machado dos Santos, Sandra Marcos, Marion Moser, Henry Ponds, Harald Scheuthle and Lius Carlos Velón Sixto is based on the annual ENQA Internal Quality Assurance seminar on the theme of Learning from each other – using benchmarking to develop IQA that was held on 16-17 June 2011 in Helsinki, Finland. It presents a general overview of the benchmarking theme and discusses common features and differences of the benchmarked agencies’ IQA activities in terms of the selected three themes: performance indicators, follow-up on feedback and staff competence/development. The report also puts forward the benchmarking partners’ views on strengths, weaknesses and recommendations for development of each other’s activities, as well as the good practice they have identified on the selected theme.

Empirical Observations on New Public Management to Increase Efficiency in Public Research - Boone or Bane?
This Paper deals with the influence that New Public Management (NPM) mechanisms have on research performance. Using a large dataset of German university Research units, it can be shown that both greater internal hierachy (espacially »strong cancellors«) as well as greater operative flexibility for the researchers themselves increase research performance. Some of the variables, including the presence of research councils, have a positive effect on research efficiency only uinder some definitions of research output. On the other hand, the introduction of research accounting systems has a negative impact.

Performance Measurement
